Rural Identities
This series explores the construction of rural identity as a contrast to the chaotic nature of Los Santos, focusing on characters “typically” associated with peripheral, non-urban spaces. Encountered in desert regions, trailer parks, and isolated roadside environments, these figures are defined through visual markers such as clothing, posture, and behaviour that signal a distinct, often exaggerated, rural identity. Their placement within these environments reinforces a spatial divide between urban and rural life, where identity is closely tied to landscape and setting.
In isolating these subjects, the work acknowledges the risk of reproducing reductive stereotypes. The game’s satirical framing often reduces rural identity to a narrow set of visual and behavioural traits, potentially reinforcing simplified, caricatured representations. This reflects broader real-world tendencies to frame rural communities through limited and often stereotypical perspectives. The series, therefore, critically examines how identity is constructed through repetition and exaggeration, questioning the implications of representing rural life across both virtual and cultural contexts.
